Doing Dishes

A serendipitous day.  To start my morning, I was enjoying a cup of coffee along with some time in the Farm Girl Connection.  One Farm Girl had written about doing the dishes by hand with her grandparents, and I commented on her sweet write up, thanking her for sparking happy memories of doing the dishes with my Nana.

Next stop, Facebook, where my sister had posted more photos in her “Grandparents” album, reminding me that today was Nana’s birthday.

Which led me to my photo albums, to find the delightful photo of Nana doing dishes while her sisters dried.  (And my little cousin’s hand waving!)

I always wanted to use the dishwasher.  I love the dishwasher… my personal servant.  Really drove me a bit nuts for everyone to stand around in the kitchen washing and drying when we could have been doing something “fun”.  But today I love the memories… all those wonderful meals, and all the “together time” in the kitchen, getting it all cleaned up, and everything put away.

I was so fortunate to get to spend that year cooking breakfast for Nana and Granddad every day.  I’d go over to their house, get that bacon going, put the jellies into the pretty little dish, get those biscuits ready for the oven…  Every day, bacon and sausage, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, coffee and juice.  And every day Nana and I did the dishes by hand, because I knew she loved it.  Me washing, her drying.

I have this vivid recollection of a day that she was looking intently into the silverware drawer, spoon in one hand, drying towel in the other, telling me that she didn’t know where to put the spoon.  Such a poignant moment in our lives.  I thanked God over and over for arranging my life so I could be there that very day, doing those dishes with her, helping her put the spoons away since she couldn’t remember how.

And then, of course, dishes done, she went to the piano and played a little concert.  She never forgot how to make that music.

That’s the music of life friends.  I hope you hear some very special tunes today.

Life moves way too fast and all we can do is create memories that will move forward and cherish the ones we have in our past. Enjoy the day, make a lasting memory.
