I Enjoy Being a Girl

When I was a young girl, I learned this Rodgers & Hammerstein piece for a little pageant I was in.  If there’s one thing my brain is good at, it’s remembering lyrics… so here’s the part we learned and sang, complete with adorable little hand motions.

When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,
I enjoy being a girl!

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers,
I drool over dresses made of lace,
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face!

I’m simply a female female

And my future I hope will be

In the arms of a brave and free male

Who’ll enjoy being a guy having a girl… like… me

~
Well… we went out for breakfast the other morning, and I ordered up my favorites.  Since lyrics are forever floating around in my head, the first line popped in a little while later while I was sweeping at one of our projects… and here came the song.  I had fun singing while I worked.  (And cracking up at the original lyrics!!  Talking on the phone in a dress made of lace with a fancy hairdo doesn’t quite describe me.  And I’d flip, alright, if my fellow sent me flowers.  Put that money toward a vacation!!)  Anyway, here’s my version that got stuck in my head…

~
When I’m having eggs and bacon

And my hash browns are in a curl

This is happiness in the makin’

I enjoy being a girl

I flip over meadows filled with flowers

I drool over mountains and a lake

I work in my big barnyard for hours

With SPF 30 on my face

I’m strictly a female female

I’m as happy as I can be

And I’ve got such a great and free male

Who enjoys being a guy eating this meal… with… me.

As usual, we lived the same life in different states and times. As a girl, I was in a pageant and had the same portion of the same song as my part! I even remember the dress I wore (pink and white gingham). I love your new lyrics – they’re more true to life and joy than the originals.

    Hi Sandy~
As you know, I’m old enough to be your mother and as I read the first tantalizing words to this article on FB, the well-remembered song danced in my body, just waiting for me to sing out! However, at such an early hour, I doubt my sound-asleep husband would be as delighted as I would at such a release!
That said, I must declare that I am a female female and the lyrics describe me all too well up to that last bit about “the pound-and-a-half of cream upon my face.” Nuh-uh; more likely the pound-and-a-half of cream should be whipped into a lovely frosting of some sort and put upon a delicious cake!
Thanks for the early-morning smiles today, dear Friend!

I wonder how many of us are now going through the day with this little ditty in our heads!! It’s especially fun to sing the “pound and a half of cream upon my face” line, isn’t it!!
