Love of the Limerick

This week I was trying to sort through part of my family tree.  Couldn’t quite remember how it all went together.  For one of the huge reunions, family members had written histories and memories.  Reading through these, I was so delighted to find what one of my second cousins had shared.  It’s a limerick that our Great Granny Borden taught her when she was a child.

There was an old lady from Brewster

She had five hens and a rooster

The old rooster died

And the old lady cried

She didn’t get as many eggs as she used to

Maybe I’ve inherited the love of the limerick from my Granny Borden.  I bet so!

I sure hope to spread that joy on down through the ages.  This year I’m enjoying reading with a little first grader.  We’re trying to get past that one… word… at… a… time… reading style, and limericks have won the day!  I want him to realize that reading is so much fun and has such great rhythm. This is the first limerick I wrote for him, and I’ve promised him many more.  Spread the joy.  Kids love it!

There once was a boy named Joe

Who had a big bump on his toe

It was gross, it was blue

Where it rubbed on his shoe

How it ever got there, I don’t know

We’ve had a great time reading… but when he read this, he got the cutest smile.. and has wanted to read it again and again, improving each time. Hooray!!

Now you have me wondering where my copies of the family histories and memories are. Guess I had better get off the computer and start looking. Love the memories.

I remember the excitement I felt the first time I actually recognized the words on the page. It was in a small village church building and the words were in a hymnbook! I am so glad you are helping bring that same joy to this young one. And I agree that the genes of your Granny Borden are not lying dormant!

I had never heard that limerick from Granny Borden. But stories of her life out on the plains of Eastern New Mexico are recalled now and then. How I wish I had written them down….maybe it’s not too late!

Yes! Let’s get them all written down!
