My Calm Crepe Myrtles

On one of those hot afternoons, when the Monday had REALLY been a Monday, and I was feeling fairly overwhelmed with it all… I went out into my barnyard to pull a few weeds, and pick up the hose to do a little watering.  That always relaxes me.

My crepe myrtles are just beautiful this year, and as I stood there giving them a little extra drink, I realized I hadn’t said a word about them all summer.  I vowed to get back out there with the good camera in the soft evening sunlight in a day or two and capture their beauty.  And I began to wonder what kinds of words I would write about them.

This is the sad reality that hit me.  I have written about them since they were first planted because they have given me such concern.  I’ve had such hopes… they’ve let me down.  I’ve watched them freeze.  I’ve watched them scorch.  I’ve been so proud of their growth, only to see them go all the way back to square one, starting again from the roots.  I’ve mourned the times they’ve been assaulted by mowers and weed whackers.  And I’ve told you all about it.

But this year, they’re doing what they’re supposed to do.  No worries.  They’re standing tall, healthy, covered in white blooms, thriving with the rain we’ve had, not really needing much help or attention.  And that’s just what they’re getting… not much attention.  Oh sure.  I admire them and smile about them.  But I haven’t told any of you.

So that’s my latest barnyard analogy.  I want to acknowledge all the wonderful people in my world who go about doing what they’re supposed to do.  No worries.  Standing tall, thriving, not really needing much help or attention.  You don’t get the accolades you deserve because we get so caught up with worry over those who are parched and stunted and assaulted by the weed whackers of life.

Today I thank you.  You are the lacy blossoms that brighten our days.  You are a calm presence.  You keep us smiling just by being you.  I sure hope you know you’re appreciated!
