Sacrifice of Praise

There’s a cute little song with this title.  It’s perfect for teaching to kids, complete with fun hand motions, delightfully peppy… all about bringing the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.  You probably know it.

One day in my women’s Bible study, a friend was discussing this particular passage in Scripture, and how the word “sacrifice” seems more in the order of hardship… and when we’re offering a sacrifice of praise, perhaps that’s when we’re hurting, and it’s not easy, but we long to praise God anyway.

I wanted to write a song that would express those feelings, and I told the group of women that I should just choose a song with a mournful sound, and write new lyrics.  I chose the hauntingly beautiful tune of “Night With Ebon Pinion”.  Maybe you’ll sing this song when your heart is broken.

Once again I’m breaking, tears fall from my eyes

You know I am hurting, You have heard my cries

Yet in my time of sorrow I’ll calmly seek Your grace

With my song I’ll bring my sacrifice of praise

Days are filled with struggle, nights are filled with pain

Lord, I am in anguish, I cry out Your name

Yet in my time of sorrow I’ll calmly seek Your grace

With my song I’ll bring my sacrifice of praise

You will bring me comfort as You always do

You will mend what’s broken, my heart will be new

Yes in my time of sorrow I’ll calmly seek Your grace

With my song I’ll bring my sacrifice of praise

I would love for you to listen to this link.  It’s from the annual singing at the Kleinwood Church of Christ in Houston.  My family attends this wonderful event every year, and this is from last year’s singing… so you’ll hear our voices blending in there with about a thousand others.  You’ll see why I chose this song to convey the feelings of agony we all experience as we go through this life.

“Night With Ebon Pinion”

I wrote my simple lyrics with some special friends in mind.  But I wrote them the day after the terrible tornadoes in Oklahoma… a place so dear to my heart.  And my heart is broken, and I’m offering a sacrifice of praise.
