Swallow That Pill

I’m so bad at it.  I have to prepare mentally.  I have to hold my head just right.  I have to gulp some water just to make sure my throat is still working before I put those vitamins in my mouth, sling them to the back, and hope they go down.  Sometimes they’re still sitting there on my tongue even after all the antics.  Sometimes they hang up in my throat.  How in the world they know to stick there is beyond me.  I’m quite capable of swallowing a piece of steak.  I should be able to get a Vitamin E gel cap to slide on through!

My Grandma knew this about me, and she’d read a little piece in a paper about tilting your head forward to make the pill swallowing easier.  I was all set to give it a try with a Shaklee Vitamin at her house one day.  The trick didn’t work. The tablet was just as stubborn as any I’d ever encountered.  The whole glass of water was almost gone, and there it sat in my mouth.

Grandma was a no-nonsense person.  She got the job done.  There was no whining.  She always halted any attempts at self-pity.  And I’ll never forget what she said to me on this particular day.  (Grandma, I quote you to myself all the time… always with a secret smile on my lips.)   When I can’t get that calcium to go down, and especially when life is handing me a difficult day, I recall that fun conversation.

She shook her head, looked me square in the eye and said, “Oh!  Swallow that pill!”  And I did.

Another thing we have in common! Vitamin C is the toughie for me. I’ve never found them in a coated form, and every time I take one I wonder if I will swallow or choke! Thanks for a morning smile. 🙂

Good memory, this week we were trying to figure out what to do with Riley’s sewing project. Mother would have thrown it away and started over, Micah and I had to laugh about what Grandma would have to say about us sewing at all. No nonsense would have prevailed!

Dr. Coleman’s pill swallowing advice was to take the pill with a bit of 7 up. It makes the tongue prickly and like majic, the pill is gone!!

Mix them up in a smoothie.

I used to have to put mine in a spoonful of applesauce!

Getting a kick out of all the suggestions! Mainly, just enjoying remembering Grandma today. While others might say of any situation, “That’s a hard pill to swallow”… she would truly have said “Swallow that pill!”

The summer hasn’t been an easy one. I keep her words in my mind more often than you know!

Calcium is the one that I have choked on the most! I usually don’t have a problem swallowing other pills.:)
