He has this trumpet.  Actually, he has a couple of them, along with a flugelhorn.  Although it goes unplayed, it sits on his desk reminding us both of so many happy times.  Perhaps he keeps it there in the hopes of once again playing it daily.  Maybe… one of these days.

That instrument has been around the world with us.  He’s played it in marching bands, symphony orchestras, for weddings, for funerals.  He even cut a record with a Christian band as a teenager.  When we lived on St. Thomas, the end of the day routine was to come home from a hot day of teaching school, where he would sit in front of the air conditioner playing Phil Driscoll tunes.  Among my many, many happy memories of him playing the trumpet… that’s always a favorite.

He started playing in the 6th grade, and in the days when he was earning less than two dollars an hour, he started saving his money to buy this horn.  It cost him over $600, but he entered high school with a wonderful silver trumpet.

How could I not fall in love with a guy who would work so hard and be that dedicated to purchase something of such beauty?  He has always amazed me with his goals and priorities.

Gary… Thank you for filling my life with music.  Happy 29th Anniversary!

I am becoming the queen of the Post Script.  Wrote this earlier in May.  Last Saturday afternoon he picked up this horn, played a beautiful hymn, then spent a couple of hours cleaning and polishing.  G… you’re always full of surprises!

Happy Anniversary, you two…………. Many more.

I like the name of the hymn underneath the trumpet.

    Thank you Marcea!

I like the name of the hymn too. Although… I should have probably used the very hymn he played that day. “My Savior Dear”, which is set to the tune of “Danny Boy”. Beautiful!

Happy celebrations! Funny how music can sometimes attract us to people. Among other things I was drawn to Rudy because he sang and played the guitar. And this was when I was in the 6th grade.:) Hope you’ve had a grand anniversary and hope your weekend will be spectacular.
