While You’re Young

We have “old” friends coming to visit in a couple of weeks.  Can’t wait to see them… and the thought of it is bringing back all kinds of wonderful memories.

We met on St. Thomas when we were all in our early twenties.  Young couples off on an adventure.  Many people said this to us:  “You’re wise to do this while you’re young.”  (In fact, some of you reading right now were probably some who said it.)

I have to admit that I found it a bit ridiculous at the time.  After all, thought I, anyone could do what we had done.  Anyone could apply for jobs, have a garage sale, put things in storage, hop on a plane, and move to the Caribbean.  Age is irrelevant.

We moved back to the States and so did our friends, and before too long we were off to another island.  And what fun news… so were our friends.  This time we all landed on Guam, where they still live.

When we made our second move to an island, again – people told us we were wise to do it while we were young.  And at that point it was really ridiculous because we were twenty nine years old, for crying out loud.  Obviously not all that young!  And again… anyone could apply for jobs, have a garage sale, put things in storage, hop on a plane, and move to a dot in the Pacific.

Well, I’m pushing fifty.  And although I still feel like I’m that girl in her twenties… I realize that it’s not so easy to apply for a job, have a garage sale, put things in storage, hop on a plane, and move off to parts unknown.  I have many responsibilities that come with being my age.  Yes, it would be possible to strike out on a grand adventure, but I shan’t.  My adventures will come in week long or month long packages these days.

And so… are you a young reader today?  Do you have an adventure in mind?  You would be wise to do it “while you’re young”.

My “2 week long adventures” have dwindled down to about 4 days! But it’s still worth the effort!

Yep! All adventures are worth the effort… no matter the time frame!!

Hafa Adai from Guam! Your blog made me smile…oh, the memories. Really looking forward to arriving in Portales, although the long plane ride to get stateside is supressing my sense of adventure, especially since I’m pushing fifty a little harder than you! See you SOON!

Funny, I used to think…What is wrong with people? What does age have to do with anything? Well, I’m finding out with these old knees that put me in constant pain! I have a new-found respect for all the things my mom did way into her 70’s. So to echo Sandy, those of you out there who are not just young at heart but young in years…”do it while you’re young”!!

Great advice. Don’t wait for retirement. It may not happen. Appreciate your health and count your blessing. Go out and smell the flowers. With a good cup of fresh ground coffee in your favorite mug!
